Cordless drills were once only used by the very wealthy or the very foolish. That was than and this is now. Now they are a common tool that almost every homeowner and construction worker uses. Most people only look at the voltage of the drills to tell them apart and use this as the single deciding factor. Most voltages go from as little as 9.6 volts to as much as 36 volts. The most widely used would be those that fall in the 14ish to 19ish range. They have good power and performance, also the weight is more manageable. Lower voltage drills have smaller lighter batteries, and vice versa.

Deciding what voltage is as easy as deciding what it will be used for. If it will be used every day for major projects like building houses it would be best to go with a higher voltage model. If it is just for the every now and then putting up a picture job, a light duty 12 or 14 volt model would likely be fine. Higher voltage also means higher price.

Most drill handles are all the same. Find one that slips in your hand with a good grip. If your going to be using it for long periods of time make sure it is well balanced. An unbalanced drill is often difficult to use and wears you down quickly.

Almost all cordless drills have a clutch in one form or another. This allows you to limit the torque applied to the drill head for different projects. There is a clutch behind the chuck, and it will disengage and make a clicking sound when the limit is reached. This helps to prevent rounding out screws or burning up the motor. Generally the better the drill the more settings it will have. Most drills also have a setting that allows you to use it without the clutch and as a drill only.

There are basically three types of batteries. They are Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal hydride, or lithium ion. They are often abbreviated as NiCd, NiMH, and li-ion. Each type of battery has different advantages and disadvantages. Most people often think only in terms of cost, but with batteries this is not always the case.

NiCd batteries were the original Rechargeable Battery. They generally have around 1000 charge cycles and are very inexpensive. They do require a little more maintenance, but make up for it with longevity. NiMH batteries require less maintenance and also have fewer charging cycles. Li-I are the newest and most costly battery. They have much lighter weight and provide more power. And that is what you need to know before buying a cordless drill.
