Choosing the Right and Safe Rechargeable Batteries
The design for rechargeable batteries is for repeated use. Recharging them allows electricity to flow continuously allowing them their recurrent use. Nickel and Cadmium (Ni-Cads) makes up 80% of the components of these batteries. A single rechargeable battery can replace a hundred single-use batteries reducing the amount of generated waste. Choosing the right rechargeable batteries is quite confusing since there are various types offered in the market these days. Nickel Metal hydride batteries keep on longer every charge than Nickel Cadmium, more environmentally friendly and manage memory effect better. NiCd batteries are much cheaper and easier to manipulate. Lithium ions are light, powerful and do not show signs of memory problems.
Rechargeable batteries, designed for repeated use, are safe for our environment and the budget. A single rechargeable battery can replace about a hundred single-use batteries anytime. Innovations in battery technology made a lot of difference, not only with its use but also with the components used in these rechargeable batteries; making it hard to choose which variety is the excellent choice for use in some applications. There are many types of rechargeable batteries but the most common types used for small electronic appliances are the nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMh) and the lithium ions. These rechargeable batteries come with their own high efficiency and safe chargers such as the Ultrafire and Pisen chargers.
Waldmar Jugner invented the first nickel cadmium battery around 1899 but the present sealed type goes back to 1947. These types of rechargeable batteries have more energy density and are relatively economical making them popular for compact and portable devices. The problem with these rechargeable batteries is that they experience some memory effects and have a higher self-discharge rate: around 10% during the initial 24 hours subsequent to charging and another 10%e every month. Self-discharge of these rechargeable batteries increases considerably with temperature, doubling with each 100 increase. Handled properly, these batteries are cost-effective and have the longest working time among all other rechargeable batteries.
Nickel metal hydride batteries are an improvement of the NiCds. These batteries have 30% more energy density compared to the NiCd rechargeable batteries and have deeper discharge cycles but with a little memory effect. They are likely to have shorter working time and disperse heat when charging. Charge time is half that of the NiCds and have 50% more self-discharge speed. These rechargeable batteries are best for compact power source in cordless and mobile phones, laptops and portable camcorders.
Lithium-ion batteries have approximately twice energy density as NiCds, making these rechargeable batteries the most compact in terms of storing energy with short self-discharge speed (6% a month). Moreover, memory effects are not part of their problem. Rapid charging is quite impossible for these types of rechargeable batteries and they are quite pricey.
