how to fix electrical outlet that has no power in upper socket?

Hi,
I have a power outlet in the wall that has power from the lower socket, but no power from the upper socket. What cause that and how to fix it? Here is a image of the outlet:

Check and see if there is a switch located somewhere that controls the top of the device. If not…

There are small tabs that carry power from top to bottom. These tabs get broken out when someone wants to control half an outlet with a switch. Or, the tab could have just separated for whatever reason.

If there is no switch to control the other half, then simply replace the outlet with a new one and all should be well.

If there is a switch and you no longer want it switched, you will have to take the constant hot and either supply it to the top half, removing the switch feed, or replace the outlet feeding only with the constant hot.
